The centenary of the Russian Revolution is an opportunity to examine its impact on the history of its own times and on the world as we know it today.

Stephen Smith, Professor of History at Oxford University and Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, has recently published Russia in Revolution: An Empire in Crisis, 1890 to 1928.

Drawing on newly opened Russian archives and recent scholarship, he pays particular attention to the impact of the Revolution on the groups that made up Russian society, from peasants and workers and the army to women and families and the Church. He offers a fresh and penetrating look at the big perennial questions about the Revolution and its consequences.
