Elif Shafak is an award-winning British-Turkish novelist, activist and thought leader. A passionate advocate for equality, women's rights, LGBT rights and freedom of speech, she is an inspiring public speaker.

Hosted by journalist Julia Wheeler, Elif discussed her latest novel 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World. Ultimately an uplifting story, it looks at themes of identity, freedom and love. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, chosen as Blackwell’s Book of the Year and selected as one of The Economist's best books of the year, 2019.

Elif believes the novel has an important task to perform in asking difficult questions; giving voice to the silenced and awakening our curiosity around situations we may not have encountered. What she asks of us is to read with an open mind.
